SIGHTING OF THE NEW MOON
Tuesday, 5. July 2016
Performance by Hasan & Husain Essop embedded in Cape Town’s annual Muslim tradition. Cape Town, 5 July 2016. Sea Point promenade. Sunset.
On the last day of the month-long Ramadan, members of Cape Town's Muslim community annually congregate in their thousands along the Sea Point promenade and on Signal Hill in anticipation of the new moon that marks the end of the fast and the celebration of Eid the next day. The spontaneous and improvised performance saw the twins take us on a tour of preparations for Ramadan, joining in with others on the promenade, who braved the treacherous weather conditions, in an age-old festive tradition of new moon sighting that is entwined with the city’s history.
