BOW CONVERSATIONS

Friday, 22. July 2016

“Nowadays the traditions we lived by are dying and people are no longer telling stories and making music. I try my best to keep it all alive.” — Madosini

For the final chapter in the Any Given Sunday series of artistic events, the legendary “Queen of Xhosa music” — Madosini — performed public concerts at Moholo LiveHouse, Institute for Creative Arts (Formerly GIPCA), and at Straight No Chaser Jazz Club. She also performed an impromptu performance at Langa taxi rank.

The Xhosa composer, singer, storyteller and multi-instrumentalist shared some of her retro-futuristic compositions for uhadi (bow), umrhubhe (mouthbow) and isitolotolo (jaw harp). The events also featured special guest cameos from multi-instrumental maverick Hilton Schilder (mouthbow, melodica), award-winning percussionist Dizu Plaatjies and Glen Ahrendse (mouthbow) in what was a truly fascinating conversation between bow roots and beat routes in new improvised conversations.

Saturday, 23 July: Institute for Creative Arts (ICA, formerly GIPCA), UCT. 6pm.
